frustration is when you get woken up by constant dull thumps from above. in my case, that was the housemate carrying out some unknown activities in her room.

i don’t think it’s wise to tell her she’s been too noisy, cos she certainly looks and sounds like those uber-sensitive people and i still wanna live in peace and harmony.

imagine that thing bouncing on your screen as a screen-sized emoticons. the chat window wasn’t even wide enough to show the entire fat-assed emoticon. it’s scary when that thing suddenly pops up right in your face.

there’s this female classmate i quite dislike in class cos she’s such a pain in the neck. it doesn’t help that she has a really bad dress sense. ok, ok i’m no fashion diva myself and i wear boring clothes but at least i don’t do what she does.

the weather’s been quite warm and sunny recently and she’s still wearing her cool weather coats. she actually has this trench coat thing in a shade of mustard yellow which she wears without considering what other colours she has on her that particular day.

there was this time she wore that trench coat with a black top (tucked into her skirt) and turquoise skirt. complete with brown boots that reached her calves and a thick belt with this huge buckle. the belt resembled those given to champions in the wrestling matches, no kidding.

this week she wore the same trench coat with a lime green dress with “layered tiers” and ruffles, a pair of middle-aged-auntie brown shoes and black knee length socks with some ancient maroon red designs on it. to add on to the horrors she had this handbag which was in a shade of dusty blue. and she always sashays around in class acting like she’s the most fashionable person.

seriously, people like that make me feel like i’ve got a terrific dress sense.

you know how you can sleep for a couple of hours and wake up thinking you’ve slept for the longest time ever?

as part of my usual tuesday-wednesday ritual i had to stay up real late to finish the assignment so i had two hours to sleep before i woke up for class. so i was lying there very stressed up about having to fall asleep soon so that i can maximise the two hours.

the next thing i knew, the alarm clock was ringing and the sky was pretty bright. so i jumped out of bed thinking i’ve missed the class and holy crap, that assignment cost me 10% of the course grade!

but no, i was perfectly on time and damn it, i hate being snapped out of sleep in a fright. it just unsettles me and gets me cranky for the entire day.

my blood pressure shoots up every tuesday as i prepare for the wednesday assignments. for these assignments i tend to search for statistics and resources to add to my arguments. so i sieve through a couple of databases to get the information i want.

the problem is, some of these databases change their layouts and search processes from time to time. i believe that in doing so, they are looking to improve user satisfaction and efficiency in retrieving data. but hell, some of their website designers have sawdust for brains, i swear. instead of simplifying the search processes, they make it more complicated, adding more unnecessary steps and stuff.

these imbecile people irritate the hell out of me and they should be banished from human civilization, otherwise they may continue to wreak havoc.

it’s 4.19am and i’m meandering towards a destination called death.

i have a thing for watches that look tough cos i don’t really like chao-gu-niang watches. tough-looking watches ooze character and i usually term them as manly watches. seah-yiyi tsked me when i told her i liked manly watches a long time ago. it’s ok, i don’t think anyone but wenwen would agree with me on the point that manly watches are nice; she’s one of the only two female friends i know who wears manly watches too.

still, there’s a limit on how many watches i should own when i’m not rich. i currently have four working watches and one that i am gonna send to the shop for repairs once i get my lazy butt out and about. interestingly, three out of the four working watches i have are new additions within this year. i think that’s enough watches for this year, unless i turn into a millionaire overnight. till then, i shall just admire manly watches from far.

does anyone understand how they derived the abbreviations? it’s not just me, right?

for this research methods course i’m doing this semester, there are two lecturers. we just switched lecturers this week and this new lecturer is smart. way too smart and knowledgeable.

the previous lecturer was very experienced in her field, which was accounting. she also had good knowledge of finance stuff but when it came to marketing, she was pretty lost. so during short class presentations where we were supposed to talk about how we could apply certain research techniques to our disciplines, i could pretty much talk rubbish without anyone realizing.

but this new lecturer, he’s quite formidable in the general field of business. it’s as if he has 72 hours a day to sit down and absorb knowledge from all business aspects. it’s freaking scary cos he’ll pounce on anyone (there’s only 10 of us in the class) for comments and we’ve gotta be tuning in to the seminar for the entire 3 hours. and he knows what we’re talking about, even though his background is in accounting. which means i can’t hoodwink anyone anymore.

my research question sounds almost frivolous in comparison to the other classmates. all of them are from accounting or finance backgrounds with the exception of a project management phd student and the sole marketing representative in the form of myself. i can’t even understand most of the terms in their research questions. it’s also bad being the only marketing student in the class cos the lecturer is very interested in how the stuff we’re learning relates to marketing.

during the seminar, we were asked to apply some stuff in our ongoing research project and talk about it. as the last time i interacted with the research project was before the term break, i had a little trouble remembering what the research question was. so i looked to my neighbour and said, “you know what? i kinda forgot what my research question was.” she gave me this incredulous look like i just told her cows are pink creatures with blue polka-dots on them.

towards the end of the seminar, the lecturer figured i should have already taken a course somewhat similar to this. so he kinda thought that i should have a solid understanding in these stuff already and of course, that would mean more contributions from me. holy crap, it’s bad enough having a global marketing lecturer who would look to me for expert comments whenever singapore (or singapore airlines) was mentioned during class. now i have to be an expert in research methods too?

there’s an obscene lack of people-photos this year, cos of the limited opportunities i can hang out with them. which makes life very boring, cos photos are so much fun to look at. yeah i have a lot of buildings-photos but still….

therefore i shall take a hell lot of photos when i go back in nov. that is, if i feel photogenic. bwahahahaha that’s like once in a blue moon?

now that i think about it, i think there’s people who owe me photos from my one-month holiday. now, hand them over! now! before i start to think that i have no friends in my life…

i’m going groceries shopping with the housemate tomorrow!

that’s kind of scary, cos we haven’t had any conversation which exceeded five minutes. how are we gonna survive the trip to the mall and back? i usually won’t pull these stunts, but she’s been offering for quite a few times now, so i thought i might just as well accept the offer. it’ll be good to do some bonding too.

but she drives, so no lugging of heavy bags up the darn slope for me. yay! i can buy all the heavy and bulky things! the problem is, i’ve just stocked up on all the heavy and bulky things. i feel like buying a 10kg sack of rice or something just to utilize the presence of a car. -_-|||

update:

the trip wasn’t that bad. sure enough, there were lots of silent moments but it wasn’t enough to kill. we went to the tiny little chinatown of canberra and we found a couple of asian groceries stores. we both went a little mad at the sight of asian groceries stores. the stores were so chinese that they even sell joss sticks and joss papers, haha. but i didn’t manage to find any mooncakes. bah.

there was also this video rental shop. you know, the kind which rents all those hong kong drama serials and to my astonishment, i’m watching, or have watched, all the latest on crunchyroll. muahahaa i feel so updated.

the housemate is very fast when it comes to groceries shopping. she doesn’t browse the aisles at all, i think. which is the total opposite of me, i’ll walk along every single aisle and look at new products that will make my life easier or happier. we went our separate ways and were done in 15 minutes instead of my usual 45 minutes. sheesh. and in my panic, i forgot to buy eggs, darn.

ok, everything you see for the next few days (weeks) is an illusion.

the blog is undergoing some MAJOR changes which are seriously obstructed by my obvious rust in css stuff.

the housemate isn’t that clean after all. i think her cleanliness and neatness is a facade. underneath that mask is a not-so-clean-and-neat personality, which i met when i went up to her room some time back and from the little things she does (or does not do) in the kitchen. i still get a little irritated when i step into the kitchen and see little crumbs or empty plastic bags strewn all over the counter-top or when she leaves her empty lunchbox unwashed, sitting on the counter-top.

aiyah, at least she tries to be neat and clean lah, she’s a lot better than the ex-housemate. for that i’m grateful enough.

because i still have frozen wontons (they’re getting frostbitten!) in the freezer, i felt like wonton noodles. which calls for char siew, or it wouldn’t be like wonton noodles at all. therefore google proved useful again as i sieved through the numerous cooking blogs and finally found something idiot-proof.

what i love about this is that the preparation is so easy, just throw in the few marinades and leave the meat to sit there for 4 hours while i work on my assignments. and it doesn’t require a bloody oven! okay, maybe the cooking time of half an hour isn’t exactly good, but it’s still quick and easy considered to other char siew recipes.

i randomly chose a long strip of meat labelled “pork fillet” and which resembled a piece of char siew because i have no idea how 五花肉 looks like. i think it turned out to be the right cut of meat anyway.

so there, my wonton noodles for dinner!

yeah, it looks brown cos i’m not gonna invest in red food colouring. what am i gonna do with the remaining? make red half-boiled eggs everyday? as long as it tastes the same, i’d eat it even it’s blue in colour.

one of my ridiculous looking moments

that was some chinese pop song by someonedunnowho some years back. and that’s who i am today. or at least, i’m half of that today, cos my left eye is swollen. i haven’t had this problem for years and the moment it strikes i’m reduced to a single-eyelid person.

now i know how i’ll look like if i didn’t have double-eyelids, a lot more asian-looking. the typical single-eyelid chinese eyes that always appear on chinese animations and cartoon characters. buggers, it’s not as if chinese have no double-eyelids.

but anyway, when i was young, my sister used to be quite obsessed with my eyes and eyelashes, cos she has small eyes and almost non-existent eyelashes. so one day while she was staring at my eyes like a few centimeters from my face, i asked her if she had a smaller view of things around her. if she looked all the way up without moving her head, could she see as much as i could? it was something we never figured out.

i guess it didn’t really matter, how much we saw physically. but sometimes i wish she’d see the bigger picture of things, to see things beyond her perspective and to see underlying intentions of people around her. that would make things so much better.

right, back to the cold-spoon treatment tracy (thanks, babe!) recommended, which provides immediate relief and brings my double-eyelids back for a while before the swell returns. gotta find a long-term cure soon, cos i can’t work on my assignment with one hand holding a cold spoon to my left eye. if the swelling doesn’t go down before tomorrow morning, how am i gonna face the world?!

the new ipod nano looks hideous. why did they kill the sleek-looking version? so what if this new one is thinner? it’s so much wider and now it looks like some product from creative. like some clumsy, bumbling version of the original ipod nano. ok, i know it’s only 52.3mm wide, but because it’s 69.8mm tall, it just looks squarish and definitely not sleek.

the colours are ugly too, what’s up with the pastel blue and green? maroon looks kinda weird too. are the designers at apple suffering from some colour blind thing? to sidetrack a bit, the ipod (regular) only has two colours, silver white and black. sheesh, pathetic is the word.

i don’t know about others, but when i’m out and about listening to music, i don’t need contacts and calendar functions in the ipod. what’s my mobile phone for, anyway? why the hell would i need a world-clock function in the ipod nano?

eeeeeek. if i were rich i’ll snap up one of the old ipod nanos which are all on sale now. the new ipod nano is just plain weird.

i hope by the time i need to get a new ipod they’ll have come up with the next generation which is hopefully, better than these monstrosities.

i have problems falling asleep cos my digestion system has gone berserk again. the combination of a windy day without a jacket, coffee with some liquor (i swear i didn’t know there was liquor in it!) on an empty stomach and a slice of lemon tart that tested the limits of my tolerance for sour food turned my face into a spectacular shade of green.

at this critical moment i realise i’ve depleted my supply of anti-nausea pills during my one-month holiday and i haven’t got any refills.

if i still can’t fall asleep i suspect i wouldn’t be able to attend the bloody group meeting tomorrow. it’s not gonna be nice if i don’t turn up tomorrow cos of the responsibilities i’ve been assigned.

life seriously sucks.

i have this project management group project where there’s a project leader, project assistant and two team members. the problem is, the project leader is excessively assertive (tongue twister!) and he doesn’t trust the team members enough for them to handle things. occasionally, he treats the other group members like kids.

fortunately i’ve been handling my own work well enough so the project leader hasn’t had the opportunity to criticize my work. on the contrary, he responds to my work so positively i’m kinda embarrassed. it’s like, the attitudes he shows to various members differ so much.

the project leader just sent a very unpleasant and untactful email to the errant team member (it’s the standard procedure to c.c. all group members in all emails) and sheesh, i think there’s gonna be full-scale war very soon. i can already imagine the errant team member cursing and swearing the the screen after reading the email. both the project leader and errant team member are guys and come from male-dominating cultures, so it’s like hooray, there’s gonna be a hell lot of sparks!

the thing is, i don’t know if the slack team member is at fault, cos they’re dealing with some IT stuff which i have not seen in my entire life. bad news is, if that lazy team member is indeed such a bad case, i’ve got another presentation i gotta work with him on.

may peace prevail.

it’s getting increasingly difficult to make decisions. when i decided to do this course, it was mostly based on impulse and it took me less than a week to make the decision. it was that kind of immature recklessness that urged me to take up the challenge.now that i’m exactly halfway through the course, i have no idea whether to stay in australia or to go back to singapore after graduation.

the thing about singapore is that i was born and bred there, my family and friends are there. and these mean a hell lot of things to me. but at the same time, because they mean so much to me, it’s sometimes less painful to distance myself slightly. but sadly, other than family and friends, shopping and food (the abundance of it 24/7) and the amazing availability of wireless hotspots which are free and faster than what i have now, there are no other reasons to keep me there.

on the other hand, living alone here in australia is so serene sometimes i forget that there’s other people in the world other than myself. it’s good cos i don’t have to consider others, don’t have to make sure i don’t piss them off, etc. etc. the people, the weather, the possibilities of travelling are all great. i’m enjoying my stay here so much that i don’t want it to become history. that one day i’d reminisce about my days in australia and not actually being here.

but i know i wouldn’t want to stay here if i’m to get a job in marketing. australia isn’t exactly a very happening place for marketing things, the action’s in (or moving to) asia i think. and with singapore being such a centre for regional offices and a platform to enter other asian markets, i’m definitely more attracted to the marketing industry over there. of course, it’s hell of a challenge getting a good marketing job in singapore.

ironically, if i knew i had to make such a difficult decision someday, i don’t think i would have come here. not even for the fun and experience.

i just realised my blog’s actual birthday is on the 23rd august 2003. that makes it 4 years and some days old. wow, i’ve been blabbering non-stop for 4 years? it’s kinda interesting to read what i wrote in the past, except when i stumble upon very old posts that reeked of the smell of a teenage blogger, even though my age wasn’t exactly teenage anymore. see, even the blog design i used was so teenage-thing. yuck.

this was one of the earliest blogskins i used, minus the image of a bright starry thing on the left hand side with some lyrics from a mayday song. the image host i used died or something, that’s why the picture isn’t there anymore. it’s amazing how this thing lets you browse through archives of websites but unfortunately, this was the only one i could find of my blog. i do kinda miss the various designs i did when i was using blogger.

but still, it’s been a good 4 years and here’s to many more!

because it’s the term break and i’m pretty much stuck at home with nothing to do, i have lots of food i want to try cooking.

so the challenge i scheduled for today was wontons.
it was a rather slow and tedious event, considering i took about 3 hours to prepare and cook everything and especially since there were not many ingredients in wontons. it was the slow chopping and grating (manually with a knife, can you imagine!) that took a really long time. and i now believe my mum’s claims that there are different kinds of ginger - yellow ginger, blue ginger and what not.

the process was hazardous and full of obstacles. the very first one was when i realised there was no bloody can opener in the kitchen. the canned food i’ve bought so far always comes with pull back rings, so they were not problems. even with a proper can opener, i usually take about 20 to 30 minutes to open a can, cos the physics of opening cans just escapes me.

so anyway, without a proper can opener, i had to poke a hole into the side of the can with some bottle opener thingy. then, i used a pair of powerful kitchen scissors to cut up the can. throughout the whole ordeal i was paranoid about cutting my fingers on the lethal metal edges. but fortunately it didn’t happen.

the second horrifying moment was when i took a wrong guess and added the wrong soy sauce. the recipe stated “soy sauce” and making a logical guess that the filling would need some colour, i added dark soy sauce. the raw filling looked abnormally brown and that’s when i realised the recipe really meant light soy sauce. doesn’t really matter, cos i ate my wontons whole without taking gu-niang bites so i didn’t notice the colour of the cooked filling anyway.because i was adventurous i tried different ways of wrapping the wontons. the triangular one was good but messy. the crumpled ball versions were easy and good but used too little filling. i tried another one which was just horrendous-looking, i wonder why all the usual recipes recommend that wrapping method.

the soup looks reddish cos i added the unwanted prawn heads into the soup, along with leftover onions and some garlic. it tasted a little strange with wontons, but i have to say it was pretty good by itself.

so there, my wontons adventure for the day. and i’ve got about 45 wontons left in the freezer.

post-edit: okay, as requested, here’s the stuff needed for a wonton adventure. the recipe was taken from some website i can’t remember…

all quantities are approximate amounts, cos i don’t have weighing scales and what-not. sheesh, i can’t believe i’m posting recipes on my blog. the earth must be rotating on the wrong axis.

1) 300g minced pork/chicken

2) 6 tablespoons chopped onions

3) 1 1/2 tablespoons grated ginger

4) 4 tablespoons water chestnuts

5) diced prawns (i bought 300g of whole cooked prawns and shelled them)

6) 3/4 to 1 teaspoon salt

7) 3/4 teaspoon sugar

1/8 teaspoon pepper

9) 1 1/2 tablespoon light soy sauce

10) 1 beaten egg

11) 60 wonton skins

mix items 1 to 10 in a nice big bowl, adding the beaten egg last. place some (i really mean a little) filling in the middle of the wonton skin and scrunch up the four corners. squeeze hard, but don’t tear the skin. OR, place some filling on one side of the wonton skin, near the middle. wet the four edges of the wonton skin and fold it into a neat triangle. make sure the edges stick nicely.

boil some soup or water, whatever. throw the wontons in and wait for them to boil. there you go, wontons!

ohmygodohmygodohmy god.

the photos i’ve taken for today, more than 50 of them, just disappeared. maybe because the memory card reader was cranky. maybe it was the memory card cos it’s not the first time it happened to this particular card.

i’m still feeling the heartache.

the only consoling factor is, it was a gloomy day today and the pictures weren’t so nice. maybe i’ll go back to the war memorial to take the photos again. but i walked for a bloody long distance can!

i was out at the shopping mall and decided i should reward myself with some outside-lunch since i’ve been good and hell, it’s the term break after all.so i decided to give the chinese stall at the food court just one more chance.

the last time i bought noodles with soy sauce chicken from them, it was damn bloody salty. since then i haven’t had the guts to try their food again. usually the chinese food over here are a lot more salty and i have no idea why. maybe they’re catering to foreign tastes of something, but then again the angmohs dun eat such salty food also mah.

i thought char siew would be a safe choice, they can’t possibly add too much salt to char siew, right?

the lady at the stall took her time slicing the char siew and arranged them to cover the entire bowl of rice and the few stalks of choy sum. then. she spooned some suspicious thing which looked like minced garlic and ginger while i stared in absolute horror. *alarm sounds. i hate garlic and ginger unless their pungent tastes are “well hidden”. then, she squeezed enough of some strange looking liquid to fill a river. it looked like a mixture of dark soy sauce and something, which i hate too. i don’t like dark soy sauce in my rice.

i sat down miserably at an empty table and tasted the suspicious looking thing. basket, it was damn bloody salty. salty enough to kill the taste of garlic and ginger. and i still have no idea what that strange looking liquid was. the char siew tasted like, pork.

there goes, no more adventures at that chinese stall ever again.

i can’t help being cynical sometimes, the module i’m taking which demands that we critique, critique and critique. that makes me even more, erm, critical.

but let’s look at some excerpts:

1) and they’re really comparing against? i mean, as a whole, all singaporeans have better-paying jobs, education levels and housing than they did 25 years ago right? so there’s something very warped about the way they are doing comparisons. or are they segregating the comparisons according to communities so that the chinese, malays and indians can progress in their own directions, with varying speeds? so, ahem, where’s the value of their findings?

2) i’m pretty sure quality of life and living standards doesn’t just mean higher disposable incomes and owning houses. the last time i heard, it also included cost of living, work-life balance and stuff and to me, it certainly includes not having to work past the age of 55. okay, at most 60. their definitions of quality of life and living standards don’t include the non-tangible variables eh?

3) yes, i know education is the big thing on the sunny island now. but seriously, if i were them i’ll worry more about the character, psychological and moral development of kids in dysfunctional families. what’s the point of being educated if one grows up to be an evil person? besides, hasn’t our friendly media featured countless stories of people who made it big despite having dropped out of school?

right, back to the real article critique i have to submit tomorrow.

it’s weird how many people have been directed to one of my earlier posts when they keyed in “pretty long toenails” or “long pretty toenails” in the search engine.

funny thing is, i didn’t talk about toenails in that particular post. and i don’t understand why anyone would search for such stuff, unless they have some toenail fetish. and, i certainly don’t have long pretty toenails, except when i’m feeling damn rich and spend on a pedicure. but i do have pretty long (as in rather long, not beautifully long) toenails cos i always forget to trim my toenails.

there you go, now i have a proper post about pretty long toenails, haha.

oh yeah, moral of the story: never trust search engines too much.
